The Central North Island encompasses an area of stunning scenic contrasts, encompassing lakes and snow-capped mountains, volcanoes and boiling mud pools, farms, dams and forests. The first Europeans in the area were missionaries, and early settlers battled to break in the land. As the years passed, tourism became increasingly important.
