The rainforest provides a rich habitat for many species, the trees enrich the soil and prevent it from being washed away. The destruction of the rainforest may also have a direct effect on the global environment. At least 500 different forest peoples live in the Amazonian rainforest. It is a sacred place to many of the inhabitants. The Amazon is the largest river system in the world
